Three of Cups

Three people raise their cups, and joy doubles because it is shared.

The image

Three women dance in a circle outdoors, raising their cups in celebration. Pumpkins, grapes and other autumn produce lie at their feet. Each wears a dress of a different color, and their movements are light and lively.

Core meaning

  • The number three stands for appreciating and confirming the core value of the suit. In the Cups, this is the first time the value of feeling and intuition is truly felt and openly celebrated, rather than existing only in the abstract.
  • The three women raising their cups read as a celebration after getting past some setback or turning point. The sense of harvest has two possible sources: a crisis has passed, or a stretch of effort has finally borne fruit.
  • Typical scenes are gatherings of friends, weddings, birthdays and team celebrations. The card does not point to one particular relationship. It shows the emotional support system of a whole circle at work.
  • The three women's arms are so closely intertwined that it is hard to tell them apart. At its heart the card is about experience being shared, and this applies in good times and bad. Celebration is only the most common form that sharing takes; it is not the whole meaning of the card.
  • The Two of Cups is a closed structure for two people. The joy of the Three of Cups has no limit on numbers, which is why it is often used for group happiness on a large scale, such as graduations and weddings inferred.
  • A common misreading needs clearing up: the Three of Cups does not mean a third party or an affair. That association comes from reading the number three too literally. The card shows a harmonious relationship among three or more people, such as a couple who have just had a child, meeting each other's family and friends, or an open collaboration that everyone involved accepts. The sense of a third person who betrays and breaks the harmony belongs to the reversal. It does not belong to the upright card.
  • The three dresses, white, red and yellow, can be read as the trinity of spirit, body and mind: Water's intuition and spirit, Fire's physical drive, and Air's thought and logic. The fruit at their feet adds Earth. Only when all four elements are present, so that what the spirit agrees with, what logic accepts, what one is actually doing and the material support behind it all line up, does the card show its real abundance. If one corner is missing, it is not complete.
  • In money questions, the Three of Cups often means shared success. More than one person gains from a joint investment or business, and the reward is earned together and shared together. Sometimes it also suggests that several good opportunities have appeared at once and the querent needs to pick the most suitable one.
  • In health questions, the Three of Cups is usually the result of being in good shape, with enough energy left over to gather and celebrate with friends. The balance of body and mind and the gratitude that come from spending time with like-minded people are themselves part of what this card celebrates.
  • The arrangement of the three cups also corresponds to the supernal triangle at the top of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the dwelling place of the creator, which symbolizes the highest divine energy and a threefold mingling of joy. The circle dance of the three women echoes the magic circle of ritual magic and symbolizes a unity and completeness that connects heaven, earth and humanity.
  • The gourds and pumpkins at their feet, taken as plants, also symbolize fertility, rebirth and spiritual renewal, echoing hidden divinity and transcendent thought.
  • The three cups are held at different heights, which can also be read as a hint of class or rank. People higher up often find it easier to feel abundant, while those lower down need more effort and more spiritual energy to reach the same sense of plenty inferred.
  • When judging the direction of the querent's finances, a few concrete questions can show whether their attitude toward money is healthy. Do they believe they can reach a big financial goal? When they see a peer earning more, is the first reaction to learn from that person or to suspect they are playing dirty? Do they equate money with personal ability and dignity? A habit of doubting and dismissing other people's success, or treating a lack of money as a lack of dignity, is often the psychological root of blocked finances.

Reversed

  • From the image: the fruit that belongs on the ground has been moved up high. Resources and results have ended up in someone else's hands, and progress will require actively asking for outside help. It is also a reminder not to fix on the result alone and ignore the process.
  • From the image: the three crossed cups face downward. A lot of effort and resources may not bring the expected return. The three women each turn in a different direction, which also hints that the collaboration is changing; someone may leave, or disagreements may make it hard to continue.
  • Negative-meaning approach (excess): overindulging in parties, alcohol and gossip, which can turn into habits that harm health.
  • Negative-meaning approach: it is also often a sign that a relationship or a job has run its course.
  • Opposite-meaning approach: the resources and conditions at hand are not really enough. Rather than straining to keep up appearances, it is better to change direction early. This is a time to stay low-key, settle what needs settling and close out this stage so the next one can begin.
  • Money and health: in money or teamwork, the reversal often points to conflict inside a group over an unfair split of the gains. If the querent cannot agree with everyone on the team, the first step is often to find someone who understands their position. In health matters it is often read as a period of isolation without support. Sometimes it also reveals unhealthy habits that a whole social circle has developed together (too many social obligations, unbalanced sleep or diet), and it is worth noticing whether the querent is being carried along by that circle's rhythm.

Correspondences

Three is the number of taking shape; see Numbers in Tarot. The card corresponds to the second decan of Cancer; see Astrological Correspondences. Its esoteric title in the Golden Dawn system is "Lord of Abundance"; see Esoteric Titles.

Views from different traditions

Crowley's Thoth system names this card "Abundance" and puts more weight on resources and plenty than the Waite system does, going beyond the social gathering itself inferred. In more divination-oriented traditional practice, the Three of Cups reversed is also often linked to speed: things may move faster than expected, or the matter may be won by acting quickly. Rachel Pollack places the card within the number logic of appreciating the suit's value and stresses that the real center of the image is shared experience itself, with celebration as its most common outward form.
